Social Media and Dignity

Through a variety of websites and apps, social media has become an essential part of many people's daily lives. Social media allows people to interact with one another and share their experiences, emotions, and personal thoughts.  Social media has had such a profound impact on society that it appears like many can't imagine life without it. However, in addition to these benefits, social media has a number of negative consequences that have impacted our lives. The issue is not the websites or social media apps themselves. It's the way people misuse it as a substitute for true communication and even face-to-face socialization. There is a quote from the novel Always On that says, "In this day and age of email, voicemail, office memos, and text messaging, we hardly ever hear each other in real-time anymore, much less listen to each other. In fact, I believe many of us have forgotten how to listen"(Baron, 231).  One specific danger for young teens and children is that spending too much time on social media can lead to cyberbullying, depression, and children can be exposed to inappropriate content. In the future, I feel that my communication skills will rapidly decrease with time. I am already use to just texting someone who is in the next room rather than getting up and going to have a in person interaction with them.

As soon as you buy a Iphone do you actually set through and read all of the terms and conditions? Probably not right? In those terms and conditions it talks about the privacy that will be taken away and Apple will be able to legally track you. Not only are you being tracked, but all of your information on your phone will be with apple forever. Personally, I feel that human dignity is being taken away when my personal information is being looked at by these large and powerful companies. Not only is Apple guilty for this, but other large companies like google tracks everyone too. An article by the LA times states that "The District of Columbia and three states are suing Google, accusing the company of deceiving consumers and invading their privacy by making it nearly impossible for them to stop their location from being tracked" (Gordon, 1). Dignity and the right of privacy is being stripped away from people without them even knowing what is going on behind the scenes.
