Stigmatization of Mental illness and Physical adversities

Brogan Victor April 22, 2022 Stigmatization of Mental illness and Physical Adversities  Many people with mental illness and physical adversities are often looked down upon in society. Society views those people as helpless and pitiful. For example, a person who suffers from a mental illness like schizophrenia has much less of a chance of getting hired at a job than a person without mental illness. Studies have found that this stigma occurs because society lacks knowledge of mental illnesses and physical adversities. Stereotypes are also due to the lack of knowledge. Some may see a blind person and think that they need assistance and are helpless. when walking around by themselves. When in reality, many people who are blind or have any other physical adversities are just as able to do daily tasks as anyone else. One specific disability that is most stigmatized is autism. Many believe that people with autism are out of control and are failed versions of normal. Steve Silberma...

Photos that Reapair human dignity

Brogan Victor April 11, 2022 Photos that Repair human dignity  The photo above depicts the story of Victor Hubbard (on the right) and Ginger Sprouse (on the left). Hubbard was completely homeless for three years on the streets in Texas. Sprouse passed Hubbard daily and continuously wondered about his story and why he was homeless. One day she stopped and asked about his past and he opened up and said that his mother left him on the street after battling mental illness for years and ended up completely homeless. Sprouse then uploaded his story on Facebook and the post quickly became popular. After many people donated and offered to help him, he ended up landing a job at Sprouse's restaurant and is now working hard to take his life back. I chose this photo to show an example of photos that repair human dignity because Sprouse was not forced to help Hubbard but chose to do so just because she wanted to. Sprouse lent Hubbard a hand when he was at his darkest point in life, and...

Photos of Undermined or Destroyed Human Dignity

Image
Brogan Victor April 11, 2022   In this image, a man is shown beating up an elderly Asian woman based solely on the fact that she is Asian. While lying helplessly on the ground, the woman was punched 125 times by the man in the picture. Human dignity is being destroyed in this picture because the man in the picture had no reason to hit her because she was simply going about her day minding her own business.  Not only is the man destroying the woman's dignity by assaulting her but is also destroying her dignity by being racist towards her.  In the surveillance footage, the man is shouting racial slurs while punching and assaulting the 67-year-old woman. Racism and assault can tear anyone's dignity apart and make people feel that they are not good enough or feel out of place in society. Personally, I believe that posting this footage was necessary to publish to show an example of how horrible racism is towards people of Asian descent and racism overall. One quote from...
