Photos that Repair human dignity

The photo above depicts the story of Victor Hubbard (on the right) and Ginger Sprouse (on the left). Hubbard was completely homeless for three years on the streets in Texas. Sprouse passed Hubbard daily and continuously wondered about his story and why he was homeless. One day she stopped and asked about his past and he opened up and said that his mother left him on the street after battling mental illness for years and ended up completely homeless. Sprouse then uploaded his story on Facebook and the post quickly became popular. After many people donated and offered to help him, he ended up landing a job at Sprouse's restaurant and is now working hard to take his life back. I chose this photo to show an example of photos that repair human dignity because Sprouse was not forced to help Hubbard but chose to do so just because she wanted to. Sprouse lent Hubbard a hand when he was at his darkest point in life, and she helped him get back on his feet and keep fighting. Sprouse let him know that he was not just a homeless man, but a human with rights and dignity to be treated better. She showed him that he is worthy of love no matter what financial situation he is in. One quote from the reading titled What Are Human Rights? that reminds me of this situation is "Human rights are based on the principle of respect for the individual. Their fundamental assumption is that each person is a moral and rational being who deserves to be treated with dignity." (UHR, n.d.). Human rights are being restored in this situation because Sprouse showed Hubbard that he is worthy of help.

This picture shows the story of NBA star Kevin Love donating $10,000 to the NBA staff affected by the Covid-19 outbreak suspending a variety of jobs. The suspensions put thousands of workers out of jobs for at least a month of work. During the time of the pandemic, many workers were suddenly put under a tremendous amount of stress because they had to figure out how to maintain a living under new rules and a new lifestyle. Kevin said that because not everyone in the NBA is automatically promised a financially stable life like the players and coaches are, he wanted to help out as much as possible. Kevin helped uplift others' dignity by not being selfish and acknowledging the workers' struggles. He decided to put his own problems with the coronavirus aside and focus on others' lives instead. Realizing that other people are dealing with problems just like we offer a new perspective on human dignity. During the time of the coronavirus and lockdown, it is easy to forget about helping other people and only wanted to help ourselves. Kevin knew that because he was financially stable during that time, does not mean everyone else was and he decided to help out as much as he can. During the discussions in class, we talked about seeing other people to their fullest and not just as background characters in our lives. While reading the story of Kevin's kindness I continuously reflected on the discussions of stepping back and looking at different perspectives of people's lives before we become too selfish thinking about our own lives.

This picture that I chose is of me holding my sign that says "This is what a feminist looks like." during a walk against domestic violence held at Carlow University. The walk focused on victims and survivors of rape and domestic violence. As a group, we marched around Central Oakland chanting and spreading awareness of how mentally and physically painful domestic violence can be. At the end of the march we gathered around a tent to hear people's abuse stories. Hearing everyone have the confidence to go on stage and open up about their stories made me feel emotional. After everyone shared their stories we walked around and hugged each other and uplifted everyone's spirit. By doing this we each acknowledged everyone's struggles as well as strengths. Acknowledging victim's strength it allows them to feel the courage to open up and talk about their situations. While participating in this walk I felt proud to be apart of such a great cause as well as opportunity. Not only did I feel proud of others for taking back their lives and standing up to their abuser, but I also felt so proud of myself for going out with such an amazing group and using my voice.
