My small communicative act in the service of human dignity

I commit to talking to and thanking the Carlow University maintenance staff at least one or two times per week this term. I will do this small, repetitive act of service in order to uphold the dignity of others in my corner of the world. I will be completing this by acknowledging the workers in the Tiernan dining hall who wash my dishes every day. Because there is a wall set up blocking contact, it is harder for me to remember to thank them. But from now on I will bend down to make eye contact and thank them for their hard work. I will also say hello to the cleaning workers in the residence hall. I mostly say hi to the cleaning workers in the elevator after they say hi first. But, from now on I would like to start the conversation. Personally, I am an extroverted person so I am comfortable reaching out to people. Sometimes I become selfish and focus on my own problems rather than acknowledging the people around me. Lastly, I will start greeting the staff around the building more rather than just walking right on by. I anticipate that my small act of kindness will help me become more grateful for the things people do around me. I also anticipate that the workers will feel better about their hard work if I acknowledge everything they do for us students and faculty.
