Gender Violence
Both of these pictures show examples of domestic as well as sexual violence through the art of photography. Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women in the world. Domestic violence does not have to be just physical, it can also be verbal, emotional, sexual, etc. Furthermore, it is very difficult to leave an abusive relationship. Many people would also say it is a dangerous situation to leave an abusive relationship. Although many people know domestic violence happens, it is often brought up way less than it should be.
The first picture shows a woman holding a sign that says, "I'll prove to you you're straight." This message is conveying that the woman in the picture is a survivor of sexual assault. Women in the LGBTQ+ community have a higher chance of suffering from domestic abuse and sexual assault. The CDC's National Intimate Partner and Sexual violence survey indicates that "44 percent of lesbians and 61 percent of bisexual women experience rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, compared to 35 percent of straight women" (HRC Foundation, n/a). The Declaration of Universal Human Rights is a document that includes basic rights that come along with being a humane being. One violation of rights this picture indicates is the violation of the right to security as well as the right to not be a subject of degradation.
Next, the second picture shows a woman with bruises and a hand over her mouth with her hands tied. The hand over her mouth shows that she is being silenced by her abuser. The rope tied around her hand shows that she is a victim of sex trafficking and is helpless not being able to move. Sex trafficking continues to be a major problem that goes on in the world every day. The novel Half The Sky, it tells many stories of victims and survivors of sex trafficking in other countries. One girl named Ratha was trafficked two times in a row. Ratha was taken by her boss at work with more than 4 other girls and they were forced to have sex with the boss's customers. After she escaped and went to the police, the police took her to a different trafficker and she was sold again. A study found that 40.3 million women have been victims of sex trafficking.
The One Billion Rising Campaign is a great way to bring awareness to the abuse and oppression women face just for being a woman. One Billion Rising has a great website with loads of information on what they stand for. The website also includes videos of women's stories and male alliance inspiration videos too. As a feminist, I have already posted many articles on social to shine a light on everything women face to educate others. In the future, I plan on joining more clubs to associate myself with other people who have the same feministic beliefs as I do. In those clubs, I want to work hard and create activities and events for people to join and learn about the worldwide oppression and discrimination of women.
