Stigmatization of Mental illness and Physical adversities

Image
Brogan Victor April 22, 2022 Stigmatization of Mental illness and Physical Adversities  Many people with mental illness and physical adversities are often looked down upon in society. Society views those people as helpless and pitiful. For example, a person who suffers from a mental illness like schizophrenia has much less of a chance of getting hired at a job than a person without mental illness. Studies have found that this stigma occurs because society lacks knowledge of mental illnesses and physical adversities. Stereotypes are also due to the lack of knowledge. Some may see a blind person and think that they need assistance and are helpless. when walking around by themselves. When in reality, many people who are blind or have any other physical adversities are just as able to do daily tasks as anyone else. One specific disability that is most stigmatized is autism. Many believe that people with autism are out of control and are failed versions of normal. Steve Silberma...

Photos that Reapair human dignity

Image
Brogan Victor April 11, 2022 Photos that Repair human dignity  The photo above depicts the story of Victor Hubbard (on the right) and Ginger Sprouse (on the left). Hubbard was completely homeless for three years on the streets in Texas. Sprouse passed Hubbard daily and continuously wondered about his story and why he was homeless. One day she stopped and asked about his past and he opened up and said that his mother left him on the street after battling mental illness for years and ended up completely homeless. Sprouse then uploaded his story on Facebook and the post quickly became popular. After many people donated and offered to help him, he ended up landing a job at Sprouse's restaurant and is now working hard to take his life back. I chose this photo to show an example of photos that repair human dignity because Sprouse was not forced to help Hubbard but chose to do so just because she wanted to. Sprouse lent Hubbard a hand when he was at his darkest point in life, and...

Photos of Undermined or Destroyed Human Dignity

Image
Brogan Victor April 11, 2022   In this image, a man is shown beating up an elderly Asian woman based solely on the fact that she is Asian. While lying helplessly on the ground, the woman was punched 125 times by the man in the picture. Human dignity is being destroyed in this picture because the man in the picture had no reason to hit her because she was simply going about her day minding her own business.  Not only is the man destroying the woman's dignity by assaulting her but is also destroying her dignity by being racist towards her.  In the surveillance footage, the man is shouting racial slurs while punching and assaulting the 67-year-old woman. Racism and assault can tear anyone's dignity apart and make people feel that they are not good enough or feel out of place in society. Personally, I believe that posting this footage was necessary to publish to show an example of how horrible racism is towards people of Asian descent and racism overall. One quote from...

Social Media

Image
Brogan Victor  March 23, 2022 Social Media and Dignity Through a variety of websites and apps, social media has become an essential part of many people's daily lives. Social media allows people to interact with one another and share their experiences, emotions, and personal thoughts.  Social media has had such a profound impact on society that it appears like many can't imagine life without it. However, in addition to these benefits, social media has a number of negative consequences that have impacted our lives. The issue is not the websites or social media apps themselves. It's the way people misuse it as a substitute for true communication and even face-to-face socialization. There is a quote from the novel Always On  that says, "In this day and age of email, voicemail, office memos, and text messaging, we hardly ever hear each other in real-time anymore, much less listen to each other. In fact, I believe many of us have forgotten how to listen"(Baron, 231)....

Gender Violence

Image
Brogan Victor February 22, 2022 Gender Violence Both of these pictures show examples of domestic as well as sexual violence through the art of photography. Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women in the world. Domestic violence does not have to be just physical, it can also be verbal, emotional, sexual, etc. Furthermore, it is very difficult to leave an abusive relationship. Many people would also say it is a dangerous situation to leave an abusive relationship. Although many people know domestic violence happens, it is often brought up way less than it should be.  The first picture shows a woman holding a sign that says, "I'll prove to you you're straight." This message is conveying that the woman in the picture is a survivor of sexual assault. Women in the LGBTQ+ community have a higher chance of suffering from domestic abuse and sexual assault. The CDC's National Intimate Partner and Sexual violence survey indicates that " 44 percent of lesbians and 61 per...

My small communicative act in the service of human dignity

Image
Brogan Victor February 14, 2022 My small communicative act in the service of human dignity I commit to talking to and thanking the Carlow University maintenance staff at least one or two times per week this term. I will do this small, repetitive act of service in order to uphold the dignity of others in my corner of the world. I will be completing this by acknowledging the workers in the Tiernan dining hall who wash my dishes every day. Because there is a wall set up blocking contact, it is harder for me to remember to thank them. But from now on I will bend down to make eye contact and thank them for their hard work. I will also say hello to the cleaning workers in the residence hall. I mostly say hi to the cleaning workers in the elevator after they say hi first. But, from now on I would like to start the conversation. Personally, I am an extroverted person so I am comfortable reaching out to people. Sometimes I become selfish and focus on my own problems rather than acknowledgi...

Communication that attempts to undermine dignity and my commitment to uphold or repair it

Image
Brogan Victor February 7th, 2022 Communication That Attempts To Undermine Dignity And My Commitment To Uphold Or Repair It I believe individuals use communication in an attempt to undermine or destroy human dignity when they disagree with one's opinion. I believe this because everything gets drawn into politics that is unnecessary. For example many of my family members argue about their political opinions that they do not agree with. I believe the split between political views worsens on social media, especially on twitter. Furthermore, I also believe that this results in bullying on the internet.  Three specific ways that I, personally, can use communication to uphold, repair, maintain, or restore dignity to others in my of the world are to compliment others. I believe this because complimenting someone helps them make feel more comfortable. Furthermore, I also believe complimenting someone boosts their confidence. I believe this because boosting someone's confidence feels g...
